On 1 September 1902, Le Voyage Dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon) was released in Paris. It was the first time that human beings landed on the moon in the sense of motion picture. The man who made it 120 years ago was not an astronaut, but an illusionist, actor, the father of early special effects, and our great film pioneer — Georges Méliès.

Shifting the cinematic perspective from "the record of real life" defined by Lumiere brothers to "the making of surreal illusions", Méliès was the first to recognize the spectacle nature of cinema. In the black-and-white era of moving images, he enriched the history of film and even the history of human civilisation with innovative special effects, narrative styles and bright colours. Méliès aimed the camera at the cosmos and magic tricks, taking the art of filmmaking far beyond reality, staging on tremendous spectacles in outer space. It is undeniable that Méliès's contributions to the birth of the Seventh Art are crucial.

Compared to literature, drama, dance, music, painting, architecture and other tangible art forms, motion picture at the beginning of its birth was just projections of light, which would become something else only when being watched by the audience. EGOTRIP always insists that film is not an art only for scholars, but an art for all people. It is about sharing the inner spirits and visions of us. With this original intention of celebrating the birth of the Seventh Art, our programme is mainly divided into two sections: Phenakistoscope Workshop for hand-made experience and a free public screening (Le Voyage Dans la Lune & Voyage à travers l’impossible).

On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Le Voyage Dans la Lune, EGOTRIP in conjunction with UCCA are launching a screening event to provide an opportunity and space for everyone to dream together. We put all audiences in a dark public space, like being at the centre of a world-wide shared dream, to watch and listen without any preconceptions, and bring back the vitality of film art.
